What is CPAP therapy?

CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is the most effective and common way to treat OSA, suitable for mild to severe sleep apnea patients.

CPAP therapy is a treatment, not a cure, for OSA. To be beneficial, CPAP must be used every time you sleep and you may find adjusting to CPAP difficult in the first few days or weeks.

How does it work?

CPAP consists of a flow generator that pumps air into a mask you wear while sleeping. The air pressure in your throat supports your airway and keeps the path to your lungs open.
Being able to breathe properly should improve your sleep – leaving you feeling refreshed in the morning. This should improve your partners sleep too, with potential improvements to your relationship.

There are 4 types of CPAP devices:

Auto CPAP

Auto CPAP can sense every breath of the user, and adjusts the air pressure and rhythm automatically to suit the user. During airway blockage, it will automatically increase the air pressure to open up the airway. When the airway resumes a clear passage, the Auto CPAP will lower the air pressure to reduce the discomfort. Consequently this higher-end Auto CPAP is more comfortable than the Fixed CPAP.

BiPAP

BiPAP is a bi-level positive airway pressure system that delivers two different positive pressure levels. It keeps the upper airway from collapsing by putting higher pressurised air during inspiration and helps users exhale by putting lower pressurised air, this also facilitates the removal of carbon dioxide from the lungs. The BiPAP has the maximum comfort in usage.

Travel CPAP

Travel CPAP often come with battery options or power solutions designed for travel, making them more versatile when access to power is limited.

Fixed CPAP

It is the basic and most economic type of CPAP, it delivers a fixed air pressure to clear the airway.
